Default 65, engine rebild

I just bought my first mustang it is a 65. I am trying to decide what to do with the motor, It is the original 289 but it has seen better days so im going to rebild. But I was thinking that as long as its out I might as well do something to get a few more horses out of it. But I just rebuilt the tranny wich is a c4 and I want to avoid doing any damage to that by building the moter to much.(if that is even possible?) Im not looking to be the fastest out there I just want a little more get up and go. so does anyone have some suggestions I could use some help.
